Are Skincare supplements worth it?

We all know that for great looking and feeling skin, we have to nourish from the inside out. But are skin care supplements a good investment to help with healthy looking skin?

Our skin is combatted nowadays more than ever. Stress, sickness and pollution are all causing havoc with our skin’s barrier so it’s incredibly important for us to approach our skincare maintenance with a 360-degree approach. However, does this extend to needing to incorporate skin care supplements in your everyday routine? Possibly not.

Do you need skin care supplements?

For the most part we can get a lot of the nutrients we need with a healthy, balanced diet and on-the-ball approach to skin maintenance. “I would say most people actually aren't going to need skincare supplements,” says Dr Amiee Vyas, Founder of Doctor Amiee Facial Aesthetics & Skin. “The most important thing is that you get your skin assessed by a proper skin health professional.” This will not only alert you to any problems or issues your skin might be facing but allow the expert to advise you of any vitamins and minerals you may be lacking.

It's also important to remember that good skin practices don’t work in silo. Along with a balanced diet, a stellar skincare routine tailored to your type and concerns, topped up with vitamins and minerals is going to give you the best chance for radiant, healthy skin.

How can you improve your skin with your diet?

“The first way is, by drinking plenty of water,” says Dr Amiee. It’s advice we hear time and time again but not drinking enough water is responsible for a multitude of skin woes. “It's not that drinking water alone is going to give you perfectly clear and glowing skin but water will mitigate the effects of many things that we consume in our diet like sugar and processed foods and help to flush those toxins out quicker.”

Diet-wise, it’s time you eat the rainbow and no, not Skittles. “Ensure that we have a lovely rainbow diet with tonnes of antioxidants to minimise inflammation, not just for the skin, but for the whole body and overall health,” says Dr Amiee. Minimising processed sugar and upping our nourish is key for reducing the signs of aging too. “If we have a lot of sugar in the diet it causes a process called glycation. This results in our collagen not being springy and buoyant but actually becoming quite rigid and not providing the skin the support it needs.” This is when we start seeing skin sagging and wrinkles appearing faster.

How can skin care supplements fit into a routine?

“If we're talking skin of colour and if hyperpigmentation is a concern, antioxidants are fantastic and definitely something to look out for,” advises Dr Amiee. “Probiotics are also helpful for have acne-prone skin.” The key thing is, whatever skincare supplement you’re adding into your routine you have to give the vitamins time to properly work. “You need to allow three or four months to really see an impact. Skin turnover takes three months so you want to be consistent in any changes you make.”
