Masks, A Quick Fix For Glowing Skin

Masks are a huge part of the skincare vernacular but can they really help improve skin tone and texture long-term?

Skin experts are asked a lot of questions about masks. Do we need them? What priority should they be given in a skincare routine? What type of mask should be used? How often should one mask? The list is seemingly endless! But these queries are understandable, as, if masks do offer the skin-changing abilities they often proclaim, then surely, we should be using them all the time? Well, we have some news for you. While there are plenty of masks that are very efficient, in today’s time-poor and financially-constrained times, most masks fall into the ‘nice to have’ category of skincare. Masks can certainly enhance your skincare routine and help with overall glow, but you can still achieve healthy skin without them.

There’s no doubt however that masking is an amazing self-care tool. There is a certain kind of self-love and pleasure that can be experienced in the ritual of applying a mask. Whether you use long or short strokes, circular motions or straight lines, your hands, a sponge or a brush, the deliberate and considered action of cocooning your skin in a mask is comforting and enforces a ten-minute time out from the hectic nature of life nowadays. Your mind is freed and your mood is lifted and yes, your skin will be enhanced even if it is for a short burst. #SelfcareSunday anyone?

WHAT KIND OF MASK SHOULD I USE FOR HEALTHY, GLOWING SKIN?

Every reputable skincare brand will have some kind of mask or treatment to accompany the daily products within their range. Generally speaking, if you have oily skin, you want opt for a clay mask, preferably green or white clay as these extract oil from deep within your skin and reduce the appearance of pores, creating a more blurred, mattified effect.

On the other side of the skin spectrum, dry skin types need a hydrating and moisture boost from their mask and would benefit from a leave-on mask. Overnight masks are great for soft bouncy skin upon waking.

If you’re looking to awaken a dull complexion, there are certain ingredients that you definitely need to look out for. Busi Chamboko, owner of Second Skin Therapy says, “For a glowing and brightening effect, you’ll want to look for a mask that has ingredients in it such as Vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic or mandelic, kojic acid and liquorice root extract.” These all help with sloughing away dead skin to reveal a brighter skin tone.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU APPLY MASKS?

Once a week is often sufficient. Think of them as skin care boosters, they can help to top up the good work that you’re already doing. Masks don’t work more or replace a healthy skincare routine if they are over used, but boost the foundations that are already there.

 ARE SHEET MASKS WORTH IT?

Sheet masks and eye patches look fun to apply but do they actually work? In short, yes, they can. “Sheet masks are certainly having a moment in the beauty industry,” says Busi. “They are highly accessible, inexpensive and easy to use beauty tools, that are fun to use, and largely safe. They generally are able to provide a burst of moisture to the surface of the skin, making it appear smoother, plumper and more hydrated. Some also have a brightening effect.”

But be warned, they aren’t for everybody! “An oily or acne-prone skin should avoid sheets masks, as they can be potentially irritating and suffocating for these skins”, Busi advises.
